The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006 prohibited the importation and use of all forms of asbestos. Blue and brown asbestos was banned in 1985 and white asbestos banned in 1999. According to CAR 2006, any building built after 1999 should no longer have an issue with asbestos.
Asbestos can be found in floor tiles, spray coatings on ceilings, walls, beams, Artex ceilings, insulating boards, lagging and so on, and electrical equipment such as flash pads and flash guards. Asbestos is responsible for over 4,000 deaths a year and the government has introduced strict legislation to protect people from the dangers associated with the inhalation of asbestos fibres.
Under current legislation it is the Building Manager's responsibility to comply with CAR 2006. Most buildings should have a Type 2 Asbestos Survey undertaken if built before 1999, unless there is (or a high probability that there is) asbestos present then a Type 3 Survey should be undertaken prior to any work where the fabric of the building is going to be disturbed.
If you are not exactly sure what to look out for with asbestos, ask a professional. RJA removes asbestos from within electrical equipment but also works closely with expert partners who assist in the identification, analysis and isolation, or the safe removal, of asbestos. All work is certified and carried out with the utmost care.
